A Refined, Understated Alternative

Zinc has become one of the most requested materials among architects designing contemporary Sydney homes, valued for its soft, cool grey tone and the crisp, uniform lines it holds across long roofing or cladding runs. Natural Metals installs zinc across standing seam, double standing seam, SnapLok and nailstrip roofing systems, as well as interlocking, flatlock and standing seam cladding applications.

One of zinc's most practical advantages is its self-healing surface. Should the material be lightly scratched or scuffed during installation or use, the exposed zinc reacts with the atmosphere to form a new protective layer over the damaged area, gradually blending the mark back into the surrounding patina.

Where Zinc Is Typically Used

Zinc suits contemporary architectural homes where a quiet, monochrome material palette is the design intent, as well as facade cladding where a consistent, soft-grey finish is preferred over the warmer tones of copper.

The Next 20 Years

Zinc reaches its long-term appearance far sooner than copper. A newly installed zinc roof or facade typically develops its stable, matte grey patina within the first six to twelve months of exposure, as the surface reacts with atmospheric moisture and carbon dioxide to form a tight, protective oxide layer. From that point, the visual change over the following twenty years is comparatively subtle — the surface may deepen slightly in tone and even out in colour consistency as it continues to weather, but it will not undergo the dramatic colour transformation associated with copper.

Our team can provide zinc samples and finish options to help visualise how the material will sit against your other facade materials.
